Remembrance Sunday and Poppy appeal 2009

Tuesday , 20 October marked the start of the 2009 Poppy Appeal in the United Kingdom, which culminates in the Remembrance Sunday commemoration on 8 November.  Each year the UK expresses its unequivocal support for the work of the Royal British Legion through its generous support of the Poppy Appeal.

Remembrance Day Service will be held at the Commonwealth War Graves Memorial in Fossvogur cemetary at 10.45 on Sunday 8 November. Reverend Bjarni Thor Bjarnason will lead a short ceremony in English. Wreaths will be laid on behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Norway, India and Russia.

The Poppy Factory in Richmond, London, produces millions of poppies every year, as well as the wreaths laid at Remembrance services worldwide and the poppy petals that fall at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.  The poppy has become a symbol of reflection and hope.
