Q: I have lived in Iceland for some years. Do I have the right to vote in the UK?

A: If you are a British citizen you can apply to be an overseas voter. As an overseas voter you are eligible to vote in elections for the UK Parliament and European Parliament. The website www.aboutmyvote.co.uk has more information about how to apply.

Q: What steps do I have to take if I move to the UK?

A: When you have a fixed residence in the UK you must obtain a National Insurance (NI) number. You will need this number to apply for a job and to receive medical treatment under the National Health System. The Department for Work and Pensions website has more information about how to apply.

Q: Do I need a special visa to study in the UK?

A: No, Icelandic students are free to study in the UK. However, they are not eligible to pay home fees and must pay the same tuition fees as overseas students.

Q: Can the Embassy give me information about Universities in the UK? And even on schools or nurseries for my children?

Q: I am moving to the UK. Can I take my car with me?

A: Yes you can. The Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency website has information about importing you vehicle to the UK.

Q: Can I join the British Armed forces?

A: You can if you are a British citizen or have dual citizenship. Icelandic citizens cannot join the British army unless they have dual British citizenship. For more information, check out the Ministry of Defence website.

Q: How do I become a British citizen?

Q: Can I take my pet with me to the UK?

A: You can, under the Pet Travel Scheme, if you provide the required documentation. Please note that you will not be able to take you pet back under that same scheme. The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority
